Andrew Terry Awford was born in Worcester on 14 July 1972. He began his career at his hometown club, Worcester City, where he became the youngest player ever to appear in the FA Cup aged 15 years and 88 days, in a tie against Boreham Wood. He moved to Pompey in 1989 and remained at the club for the remainder of his playing career, finally forced to quit at the end of the  2000-01 season due to a persistent knee injury. He made over 300 appearances for the club.

Andy then took up a role as chief scout at Pompey and became reserve team manager, before moving to Oxford United in April 2006 to work as first team coach   alongside former Pompey boss Jim Smith. He then became assistant manager of Bognor Regis Town in June 2008, but resigned the position in January 2009. Andy became Academy manager at Pompey in 2011, and became assistant to caretaker first team boss Guy Whittingham in November 2012 when then manager Michael Appleton left for Blackpool. He became caretaker manager when Whittingham, who had been made permanent manager, was sacked in November 2013. When Richie Barker left Pompey as manager by mutual consent on 27 March 2014, Andy became caretaker manager for a second time and oversaw the club's escape from the bottom of the League Two table. He took up a permanent appointment as manager on 1st May 2014, signing a one-year rolling contract. Andy left his role as manager by mutual consent on 13 April 2015.

Andy's son, Nick, was a first team player at Pompey from April 2013 to February 2015.
