PU PREVIEW 2: AFC WIMBLEDON
19/07/2014 09:29AFC Wimbledon was founded in May 2002 after Wimbledon FC relocated to Milton Keynes and subsequently changed their name to Milton Keynes Dons. Wimbledon fans strongly opposed the move and founded their own club as they believed the original club no longer represented Wimbledon's legacy and traditions. The "phoenix club" AFC Wimbledon began life in the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League, the ninth tier of English football. The club achieved five promotions in nine seasons, culminating in promotion to League Two on 21 May 2011 when they defeated Luton Town 4-3 on penalties in the Conference play-off final. AFC Wimbledon is the first club formed in the 21st century to achieve Football League status.
'AFC Wimbledon fans regard MK Dons as the symbol of all that is wrong with modern football', according to Aaron Gratton (full article can be found via https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/aaron-gratton/wimbledon-mk-dons_b_5504002.html).
AFC Wimbledon play at Kingsmeadow in Kingston upon Thames, a ground that they share with non-league side Kingstonian, and are managed by Wally Downes, although he is currently suspended. Assistant manager Glyn Hodges is currently in charge of the first team. The Dons (or Wombles) finished 20th in League One in the 2018-19 campaign.
Pompey have played AFC Wimbledon on eleven occasions in the League, losing four games and winning six, with one game drawn. The Dons won the only Cup meeting, a League Cup game at Fratton Park in August 2018. The last League meeting was in October 2019 at Kingsmeadow, when AFC Wimbledon won 1-0.
Famous fans of AFC Wimbledon include the actor Samuel West.
