Burton Albion are not the first Football League club from the Staffordshire town. Burton Swifts and Burton Wanderers both played in the Football League in the 1890s before merging to become Burton United. The merged side played in the Football League between 1901 and 1907. Burton Albion FC was founded in 1950 and joined the Birmingham & District League. They moved from their initial home, the Lloyds Foundry ground to Eton Park in September 1958, and remained there until 2005. The new ground, the Pirelli Stadium, is opposite where Eton Park stood (the old ground was demolished). Burton played in both the Southern League and Northern Premier League before entering the Football Conference in 2002 and were promoted to the Football League in 2009. The Brewers are managed by Nigel Clough and finished the 2018-19 League One season in 9th place.
Burton's most famous result came whilst they were still a non-league club, when they drew 0-0 with Manchester United in the FA Cup 3rd round on 8 January 2006. They lost the replay 5-0 but broke the record for away attendance in a competitive game at Old Trafford by taking almost 11,000 fans to the game.
Pompey have met Burton Albion on six occasions, Pompey winning twice and Burton once, with the other three matches drawn. The last meeting was in League One in April 2019 at Pirelli Stadium, which Pompey won 2-1.
