PU PREVIEW 47: SCUNTHORPE UNITED
23/09/2017 00:02Scunthorpe United FC was formed in 1899, and in 1910 merged with local rivals North Lindsey United to become Scunthorpe & Lindsey United. The club joined the Midland League in 1912 and applied unsuccessfully in 1921 to join the Football League. Scunthorpe was finally accepted in 1950 when the League structure was expanded and dropped the '& Lindsey' tag from their name in 1958. In the same year, they won promotion to Division Two. The club moved from their Old Showground home to a new, purpose-built stadium, Glanford Park, in 1988. Scunthorpe's first appearance at Wembley was in the 1992 Fourth Division play-off final, where they lost to Blackpool on penalties. They reached Wembley twice in the 2008-09 season, losing in the Football League Trophy final to Luton but defeating Millwall in the League One play-off final.
Scunthorpe's nickname is The Iron and they are managed by Paul Hurst (appointed May 2019). The Iron finished the 2018-19 League One season in 23rd place and were relegated to League Two.
Pompey and Scunthorpe have met on twenty-eight occasions, the first coming in the FA Cup in January 1954. Of the six FA Cup meetings, Pompey has won three times with the other games ending as draws. Of the twenty-two League games, Pompey has won seven and Scunthorpe nine with the other six drawn. In the most recent meeting, Pompey won 2-0 at Fratton Park in March 2019.
